Letting Go of Stress and Worry

Thoughtful WomenLearning to adapt to change will help you deal with many of the stresses of modern life. Use the following technique to cope with change and to let go of stress and worry.

Go to a quiet room where there are no distractions. Take a moment to get in a comfortable position, close your eyes and focus your attention on your breathing.

Then begin breathing slowly and deeply – in through your nose and out through your mouth – in a circular breathing motion. Breathe away any tension left in your body with every slow out-breath, and allow yourself to relax more and more.

Continue this breathing pattern a dozen or more times and clear away any unwanted thoughts so that your mind becomes still and quiet. Don’t worry if you get the odd unwanted thought, just re-centre your mind and allow the thought to drift away again. Just focus on the stillness of the moment.

Now you can affirm to yourself that you embrace change and that you accept new challenges as opportunities to learn. Choose three affirmations from the list below that are most suitable to your situation. Then repeat each one slowly and steadily in sequence:

When you repeat your three affirmations, say them with real feeling and belief. Repeat them over and over like a mantra for a few minutes or as long as you like. There is no limit to how long you spend on this. The key is to really connect with your inner feelings as you say them.

When you feel that these new beliefs are part of you, slowly open your eyes and come back to full alertness. By practising this technique regularly, you will notice that you feel much more positive in the days and weeks ahead.
